Why Am I Sore After Getting Adjustments?

by | May 14, 2025 | Chiropractic Care

You have started your chiropractic journey, fantastic!  Thank you for trusting us on your road to optimal health and wellness.  Sometimes even as symptoms were initially improving, an old soreness can flare up again.  When a forgotten injury reappears you may be thinking, what’s going on, I thought Chiropractic was supposed to help.  Have no fear, this is a normal experience called retracing.  This process does not happen to everyone, injuries are different, and recovery is also a personal experience.  If you are experiencing retracing, here is what is happening to you, what you can do about it and what comes next.

What is Retracing?

Retracing is when a patient experiences a temporary increase in symptoms, old injury flare-ups, soreness, or discomfort after an adjustment.  It is a temporary experience that does not happen to everyone.

Why is it Happening to Me?

The body has the ability to heal itself, but healing isn’t a linear process, it goes up and down, stopping and starting.  Retracing is the result of the body beginning to correct and heal itself.  Just like the body will compensate for injuries, now that the body has begun healing the parts of you that have learned to compensate for the injuries or strains are now starting to heal.  The result of this is lingering soreness or discomfort and although it does not happen to everyone, it is common enough that it has been named “Retracing”.

What Should You Do?

Don’t panic or get discouraged.  Retracing is short lived, usually 3-5 days.  The best thing you can do is continue with your treatment plan.  You don’t stop your new workout routine when your body goes through some soreness, same idea here.  Communication is key, let us know what you are experiencing so if we need to modify something or move more slowly into your correction we can talk about it.

What Can You Do Now?

In addition to moving forward with your chiropractic care, here are some things you can do to feel better.   First, take it easy.  Whether something is sore or not comfortable, it’s not time to push yourself.  Relax and get some extra rest.  Second, remember to stay hydrated so your body can function at its best.  Third, using heat or cold therapies can be beneficial. Always ask your chiropractor what the best option for you may be.

Keep in mind: This too shall pass!  You are doing what is best for your overall health and wellness.  Retracing is one step on the journey.  Everything will be ok and in time, even better than ok.  With continued Chiropractic care, your body will be able to function at its highest level so you can live the life you want.
